For years I dreaded the day that Jason Derulo would make his comeback, and for years I believed we were living in times too bleak and miserable for someone like him to ever succeed. But my opinion really sank in 2014, when, back-to-back, he released two of the worst pop songs of the entire decade—’Talk Dirty’, and ‘Wiggle’. ( Log Out /  So just how does Derulo tackle it? As a song, “Savage Love” is pure musical incoherence. Not having it, Jawsh put his foot down and demanded he be co-credited as the lead artist on the song. To this day, I can’t think of a single set of back-to-back singles so notoriously devoid of quality, substance or any kind of artistic value, and in the years that followed, I began dreading the day when something worse would pop up, if it was even possible. Not wanting to get Robin Thicke-d, Derulo promptly credited the song to Jawsh and marketed it as a collaboration.
( Log Out /  So this song first came to life as the brainchild of one Jawsh 685, a 17-year old DJ and music producer from New Zealand, and boy oh boy was his age obvious from the very fact of his stage name, huh. And once word came out, Derulo faced widespread backlash for his unauthorized sampling.
It doesn’t work as a summer pop song because Derulo’s angsty whining distracts from the otherwise upbeat, happy vibe, and it’s also not a good heartbreak song because it’s not communicating the same feeling that the lyrics are. Look, I never thought I’d end up coming to the defense of an obnoxious TikTok song by a random teenager, but here we are—Jason Derulo may have jacked the beat, the melody, and even the viral chart success of the song, but let me be clear—”Savage Love” has absolutely nothing to do with “Lazed (Siren Beat)”. There’s not enough room for Derulo to breathe, which makes his singing sound belabored and forced. The song was already big on TikTok before Derulo got his grubby little hands on it, which means all anyone’s ever gonna hear are the first fifteen seconds of the song. And even if you argue that maybe he’s just doing it to convey the angst and heartbreak that this song is ostensibly trying to convey, he’s doing it in the wrongest way possible. It’s really galling how the song came into his possession in the first place, but what makes it even worse is that he used it to make this garbage.
