The title is based on the hope that people, like elephants, can remember facts from many years before. Very enjoyable. The plot is always more sophisticated than the kernel of language from which it grows. not my favorite though. :), Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2015. However, I thought the plot was wonderful and the clues are the result of a first class mind at work. This mystery novel with 'Elephants' in its title uses the word elephant metaphorically to identify humans with long memories. Had some great developments and once you get to the part of the dog you can kind of predict what happens but it was still a good story. If Poirot and Ariadne Oliver can find out the answers a decade after the original deaths then it doesn't say much for Inspector Garroway and his detectives who investigated the original crime. Greta Scacchi was marvelous as always as the snobbish, yet mercenary Mrs. Burton-Cox. Wählen Sie eine Sprache für Ihren Einkauf. | But despite all these elements, the entire book read, not like an Agatha Christie, but like someone attempting to write in the style of Agatha Christie. The story managed to remain somewhat intriguing. As usual, the teamwork of David Suchet and Zoë Wanamaker is highly enjoyable; here, Hercule Poirot and Ariadne Oliver investigate two separate cases, one of the past and one of the present, which turn out to be strongly connected. Only rating this low because this is the first Agatha Christie book I've read where I guessed what had happened/who did it, and I was right! The 1972 novel, "Elephants Can Remember" proved to be the last Poirot… Juni 2020. Four of her most interesting novels about cold cases were “Five Little Pigs” (1942), “Ordeal by Innocence” (1958), “Hallowe’en Party” (1969), “Nemesis” (1971) and “Sleeping Murder” (1976). My only reservation is for Kingsley, too bland and solid for playing the tormented artist,Tom Riley would have been perfect for the part. But above all, wonderful Elsa Mollien as a dark, secretive Au Pair, matching in acting skills even the colossal Poirot played by Suchet. If you want hope against hope itself that Curtain will be shelved for two or three years giving space to another couple of seasons of Poirot, please, watch the confrontation among Mollien and Suchet in Paris. This is Poirot with all its beauty, its grace, its drama played with effortless, elegant understatement .Time Out can close like News of the World. How they can't understand that this and not Boring Broadchurch is British (and,I'm afraid,Universal) TV at its own possible best? Second tier Christie, but still very entertaining & fun. It's time to put Poirot to bed. Hercule Poirot's friend, the crime-writer Ariadne Oliver, is approached by a woman, Mrs Burton-Cox, who inquires about the death of General and Lady Ravenscroft, 13 years earlier. Mrs. Oliver stumbled upon a woman who happened to be a mother of a guy who was about to marry Mrs. Oliver's goddaughter. I enjoyed it . He has no big emotional outbursts, and Suchet relies on small facial expressions which he times with scientific precision. Forty-one years following its publication, “Elephants Can Remember” was adapted as an 89-minute television movie for the last season of ITV’s “AGATHA CHRISTIE’S POIROT”. The latter is requested by an old friend, a psychiatrist named Dr. Willoughby, to investigate the murder of his father, who operated the Willoughby Institute for psychologically troubled patients. Ariadne Oliver was not a "fill in" character as one reviewer here suggested. I have seen this novel discussed as evidence of Ms. Christie's earlier stages of dementia. The character commanded a lot of screen time and Wanamaker’s bristling performance was a joy – her bohemian, vaguely eccentric air chiming perfectly with Suchet’s upright Poirot. New York: Harper Collins, 2011 (first published 1972). Apart from a few added extras not originally in the novel (including a sub-plot that, surprisingly, pays off) this adaptation did justice to Christie's novel, and remains very true to it - something, I fear, some earlier adaptations failed to do. It is believed by many that the 1976 novel, “Curtain”, was the last one written by Agatha Christie that featured Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. [ twin swap, why there were so many wigs, and the dog bite. See all details for ELEPHANTS CAN REMEMBER. A 4+, not top level, but very pleasing, nonetheless. He basically steps in at the end and reveals the solution that I this time have little idea of how he arrived at. That's that. It really is not going to feel the same not having another adaptation to look forward to; this said we do have the series and can always watch every episode as much as we want. Plot: Crime novelist Ariadne Oliver asks Mr Poirot to find out the truth about the double deaths of her goddaughter’s parents 15 years earlier. This was my least favorite of all the Poirot novels. Give it to Agatha Christie's superb story telling skills that the ace detective Poiroit is able to solve the mystery long after the crime has been committed. rather than the detective himself. Suchet is, tho, rather remarkable, in other roles looking and acting nothing like he does here. 'Elephants Can Remember'is not a very rich novel and will certainly not make you bang your head against the wall. The ending is disappointing and the plot is somewhat infertile. As said by one of the reviewers, the climax is flat.I was not completely thrilled ,however, for Agatha Christie starters, give it a go! But there were times when his photography looked slightly fuzzy and ended up irritating me. Cold cases have featured in some of the most interesting novels that Agatha Christie had written throughout her career. To be fair, ELEPHANTS CAN REMEMBER (the novel) is one of the last full-length Poirot cases (Dame Agatha penned CURTAIN, published after her death, decades earlier) and it's pretty thin on the ground. An elderly psychiatrist is drowned and the son and suspect is a family friend of Poirot, who duly investigates; this leaves him unavailable to assist crime writer Ariadne Oliver, who is approached by Lady Burton-Cox, whose son is due to marry Oliver's goddaughter Celia – but not till Lady Burton-Cox knows the story behind the seeming double-suicide of Celia's parents many years ago. Elephants Can Remember made me sad...because I solved it. Poirot and Oliver (Christie's alter ego) talk about remembering the past, right and wrong. It was smart to make crime novelist Ariadne, often marginalised in the books, do some sleuthing. And if it was murder-suicide, who shot who? Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. That's what GR is here for. I read somewhere that Elephants Can Remember was Dame Christie's last novel, written while she was in the first stages of dementia. :), Quite a slow moving and uninteresting ‘cold case’ Poirot story with most of the ‘investigation’ (that really consists of dialogue with no apparent revelations whatsoever) being carried out by a woman crime novelist(!) Some ten or fifteen years earlier, the bodies of Mrs. Oliver’s close friend Margaret Ravenscroft and General Alistair Ravenscroft were found near their manor house in Overcliffe. I know what you are thinking. Thanks to Jeff Tessler’s production designs and Miranda Cull’s art direction, “ELEPHANTS CAN REMEMBER” proved to be a very attractive looking production. Elephants Can Remember was always one of my favourites as it featured Ariadne prominently, so it was wonderful seeing Zoe Wanamaker reprising the role and giving the episode a few fantastic giggles - as only Ariadne and her way with words can. I had heard she wrote this at the end of her life, possibly while suffering from the onset of dementia. Insgesamt besteht das Buch aus vielen Wiederholungen, langen Gesprächen mit diversen Personen, wobei das ganze den Eindruck eines quälend langen Versuchs genügend Buchseiten zu füllen erweckt. I read her stories many times and there are so many that they continue to bring pleasure. She's hilarious, and for that alone, I'm giving this book 3.5 stars. I am enjoying reading this book, perhaps now with greater appreciation than I did many years ago when I read it for the first time and found it disappointing. Hercule Poirot is approached by his friend, writer Ariadne Oliver, for help with a 13-year old mystery she's investigating. The latter's parents were found dead one morning a long time ago and that woman reminded about this to Mrs. Oliver who in turn decided to finally dig our the truth as the case remained unsolved. And I love Poirot, but he appears little in this story, as Ariadne Oliver does too many investigations. Was a suicide pact? Habe bereits alle Christie Krimis mit Poirot und daher dieses als letztes der Vollständigkeit halber auch gelesen. Create a free website or blog at WordPress.com. Firstly, there were some piquant, bijou turns. Suchet just doesn't really want to be there. ( Log Out / "Elephants Can Remember" is my first Agatha Christie novel and I rather fear that I may have begun my reading at the nadir of her accomplishments rather than at the apogee.
